Train Travel In Europe. I Love It!!

One of the things I love about going to Europe is traveling by train. During our summer vacation, in September, we rode the train from Amsterdam to Brugge, then from Brugge to Brussels. Train travel is easy. It provides restful down time during your vacation plus there’s the added value of the ever changing landscape.

Along the way, as I rolled into the various towns and cities, the countryside slowly disappears and gives way to apartments, office buildings, and graffiti. There’s also the people watching when pulling into a train station. I like seeing it all. To me, traveling on a train is like watching a live movie.

If you’re visiting Europe, I highly recommend train travel. Especially if your destination is less than 4 or 5 hours away (by train). The cost is probably going to be less than airfare (and that is with a 1st class ticket). You get the experience, the scenery, the downtime, and you don’t have to deal with going to the airport. If your destination is further away, that doesn’t mean you should rule out train travel. At this point airfare is probably cheaper than taking the train, but with train travel it’s the entire experience, air travel is about getting you from point A to point B, train travel is about the journey.

  1. I recently moved to KSA and my husbands first r&r is coming up in april and we are looking into vacation options. We have 3 children ages 7, 8 & 12. Would you recommend Europe or a resort/beach type of vacation for this time of year? A bike/train trip around the Netherlands sounds like a great option, but not sure about the time of year. Any suggestions you would have would be greatly appreciated! Love reading your blog!!!

    • Hello Kelly,

It’s hard for me to make suggestions since I would have to know more about your family. From the top of my head I would stick to beach resorts or maybe a cruise in which you can both relax, take in a few excursions, and have a built in “sitter” for the children. I would not suggest traveling through Europe by train, it seems like it would be a pain in the butt with kids. But, I guess that would depend on the kids. It’s been a long time since I’ve traveled with a child and when I did I only have one so, my experience is different. If you don’t have a lot of luggage and if the kids are cooperative you could make the train travel work.
